Synopsis
Michael Cimino's emotionally wrenching
epic about the effect of the Vietnam War on three boyhood friends from a Pennsylvania
steel town. Mike, Steve and Nick are children of Russian immigrants, blue-collar workers
who believe in the American dream and accept America's involvement in the war
unquestioningly. But once they get to Vietnam, their ideas about honor and what it means
to be a man -- expressed in the ritualized slaughter of their annual deer hunting
expedition -- give way in the face of the bloody mayhem that is the war. Vietnam becomes a
twilight zone of surreal violence from which none of them can ever completely emerge.
